What was your first job?
At 19, straight out of college, I got a job as an HR Assistant in a company that teaches English as a second language to Koreans and Japanese. It was a different workplace environment culturally.
What was your best job?
I was a trainer at a hotel. It wasn’t the best company but the job of coaching and training people and helping them succeed in what they do was really rewarding.
Who was the biggest influence in your career?
My parents. My dad taught me integrity and resilience while my mom taught me perseverance. They’ve always been encouraging and supportive of whatever career venture I choose to take, so even though I may make mistakes or wrong decisions along the way, I’m confident it’s okay.
What would your ideal job be?
Any job that I can feel a sense of contribution, learn something and have fun whilst getting paid, is ideal.
If you could have one super-human power what would it be?
Flying! I can help save a life with that kind of super-human power. I can also save money on plane tickets whenever I want to travel :)
What’s your guilty pleasure?
I have been known to laze on the couch for several hours on a weekend, while binge-watching a cheesy romcom.
Do you have any other skills or talents others don’t really know about?
I’m really fond of music and I can write songs if the mood crops up. Can’t say I’m very good at it though!
Name a few of your daily habits?
Jumpstart my day with some good music and coffee (two things I couldn’t live a day without) I’ve also been enjoying going to the gym lately. I’m training myself to make that a daily habit.
What publications do you regularly read?
I’m not the most spiritual person but I make sure to read a bible passage or two daily to get some inspiration throughout my day. I read some self-help books as well. I catch up on worldwide current events through social media.
Can you tell me a little bit about the challenges you’ve faced trying to find employment?
It was tough being a new immigrant as I had to compete with other skilled job seekers who already had local job experience. Plus, my work experiences are somewhat diverse which probably made it difficult for employers to assess my core skill. I had to utilise every job portal I could find on the internet to send my CV, make call after call, exhaust my network for job referrals.... I was also on a tight budget during that unemployment phase. The tide changed for the better when I got the call from Weploy.
Do you think that the traditional structure of hiring is fair?
There are huge inefficiencies within the traditional hiring structure. This is why I see Weploy as a game-changer. Weploy’s hiring landscape allows for positive, healthy competition within the Weploy community. Not only am I prompted to be more proactive, but I’m also encouraged to look internally with a critical lens and seek out opportunities to upskill. The platform provides an opportunity to land a job based on actual skill and not on other surplus factors (such as where you’re from, how old you are etc).
Did Weploy change your situation significantly? If so, can you tell me two ways it has helped further your career path?
Absolutely! Firstly, Weploy has paved the way for me to secure my first job in Melbourne which has been life-changing. Now that I am a part of this amazing Weploy community, I can worry less about not being able to find work in the future. I know Weploy has got me covered.
Do you feel that opportunities through Weploy changed your perspective?
It made me view “finding employment” from a different lens. Being part of the Weploy community makes me feel more in control of my career decisions.
What was the process like for you?
